Information about Electric vehicle (EV) charging point installation and maintenance – Apprenticeship unit (level 3)

This apprenticeship unit is for existing employed electricians who, with the support of their employer, need upskilling to install, inspect, test and maintain commercial electric vehicle charger units.

Apprenticeship units are short, flexible training courses based on employer-designed occupational standards.

You can only enrol your existing employees in an apprenticeship unit. Employees who are already doing an apprenticeship cannot do them.

Technical knowledge

  • Health and safety legislation regulation and safe working practices relevant to electric vehicle charge point installation and maintenance, covering hazards and risks and how these can be avoided.
  • Mathematical and scientific techniques, formulae, and calculations used in electric vehicle charge point installation.
  • The purpose of different charge point equipment and systems and their characteristics, features, and their electrical requirements in industrial, commercial and residential environments.
  • Processes and procedures including the design, planning, setting up, and installing electric vehicle charge points in commercial, and residential environments.
  • Methods of terminating and connecting cables for electric vehicle charge systems in industrial, commercial, and residential environments.
  • Fault diagnosis and rectification of electric vehicle charge point system using different diagnostic and problem-solving techniques and the methods to find, assess, and resolve faults in industrial, commercial, and residential environments.

Technical skills

  • Comply with all relevant legislation including environmental, regulations, codes of practice and other relevant information and guidance when planning and carrying out electric vehicle charge point system installation and maintenance activities.
