Retail service, supply and administration practitioners work across a range settings, for example in a such as food, fashion, building and automotive and manufacturing.
Foundation apprenticeships introduce skills for a range of jobs in a sector, and provide general skills for work. After a foundation, apprentices can specialise and do a standard level 2 or 3 apprenticeship.
Employers get an incentive payment for foundation apprenticeships, as well as government funding for training and assessment costs.

Who can do a foundation apprenticeship
At the start of the apprenticeship, they must be:- aged between 16 to 21 (or 15 if their 16th birthday is between the last Friday of June and 31 August)
- aged between 22 to 24 and
- have an education, health and care plan (EHC)
- be in care or a care leaver
- be a prisoner or a prison leaver

Technical knowledge
- Introduction to the retail sector and how its service, supply and administration functions contribute to its operating environment.
- Typical business structures, values, products, brands, customers, targets, and how their role and responsibilities contribute to these.*
- The flow from supplier to distribution to store and customer.
- Key methods and techniques for determining diverse customer needs and meeting these with appropriate products or services.*
- Fundamental approaches for communicating with customers and service recovery.*
- Branding, visual standards, promotional activity and how these relate to merchandising.
- Key principles of stock management and loss prevention.*
- Fundamental digital tools and methods to support service, supply and administrative activities, including omnichannel basics.
- Teamworking values, requirements and approaches to support internal collaboration.
- Key regulatory and legislative requirements and methods to support key responsibilities, including the importance of their application.
- Key administrative approaches and organisational tools for time management, data handling and supporting workflow.*
- Key approaches and metrics to support continuous improvement.
- Fundamental principles of equality, diversity and inclusion.*
- Basic commercial concepts including promotions, availability, waste and shrink, and how accurate price labels, tidy shelves and date rotation support performance.*

- Apply sales methods and techniques to support or influence the customer in their purchasing decisions.
